Howdy!

I am excited about the upcoming 2010-2011 year for the Greater Houston Chapter of TSPE. This year, there will be many Opportunities as well as many Challences facing the Chapter.

Some of the Challenges and Opportunities provided by the Greater Houston Chapter of TSPE include:

Several of these Challenges and Opportunities are already included in the Monthly Calendar of Events on the Chapter website www.tspehouston.org. I Challenge YOU to take advantage of these Opportunities to attend and become more involved. I have thoroughly enjoyed the Opportunities that have been presented by the Challenges that I have encountered through volunteering. I have learned through many years of volunteering that the rewards you reap often far exceed the efforts.

I hope you will be inspired by my Challenge and join the Greater Houston Chapter in the upcoming events. TSPE May 11, 2010 Membership Meeting - Education

Please plan to attend the Greater Houston Chapter TSPE May Education Night meeting on May 11, 2010 at 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm at the HESS CLUB located at 5430 Westheimer Road, Houston, Texas 77056. The guest speaker is Dr. Robin Forman, Dean of Undergraduates and Professor of Mathematics.

At this meeting, TSPE will recognize local middle school students excelling in competitions for MATHCOUNTS and Future Cities. In addition, scholarships will be awarded to outstanding local seniors planning to pursue engineering studies at Texas colleges. MATHCOUNTS and Future Cities competitions provide today’s students with the foundation for success in science, technology, engineering and mathematics careers.

Scholarships - Submit Application by January 15, 2010

Last year was another great year as far as scholarships are concerned. The Greater Houston Chapter awarded two renewable 4-year scholarships in the amount of $5,500 each, two additional scholarships of $1,000 each to graduating high school students in the Houston area and another $1,000 scholarship to a University of Houston Engineering student. The total amount of scholarship awarded including previous 4-year scholarships was $16,000. This was above and beyond any previous year of scholarships.

The Texas Engineering Foundation (TEF) has recently approved the 2010 scholarship application form. The scholarship applications are provided to Texas high school counselors and will soon be available at www.tspe.org under the scholarship heading. In addition to this scholarship application, other funding options for students pursuing engineering can be seen on the same website location. The scholarship applications are due Friday, January 15, 2009. If you know any students who qualify for this scholarship program, encourage them to visit the website or contact their local Scholarship Committee Chair.

This year, the Greater Houston Chapter will award two scholarships to graduating high school seniors in the Greater Houston area. The scholarships are in the amount of $5,500 to be spread over the four years, gradually increasing with the advancement of the student. Students applying for the scholarships must meet GPA, SAT or ACT requirements, plan to attend a Texas college, major in an accredited engineering program, and plan to participate in an engineering professional society, preferably a student chapter of TSPE where available.

Don’t forget, you can earn up to 5 PDH credits for active involvement with any technical/professional society involvement and this scholarship committee counts!

Young Engineer of the Year Applications

President's Message - August 2009

Summer has gone by so quickly with vacations, work, and conferences. I hope everyone has enjoyed it, even with the extremely hot Houston temperatures. Hopefully the break has helped to prepare each of us for the challenges ahead. This year holds several, including keeping the Chapter’s very important educational programs, and scholarships, at a level at least equal to last year in light of the current economy.

As President, one of my goals is to increase the number of active members in the Greater Houston Chapter of TSPE. This means that committee sizes will increase along with the number of members that attend program meetings. Momentum and value will be gained as the number of active members increase. I also plan to focus on ways to keep current members in the Chapter by making them aware of the value they receive from their membership. The best way for a member to get value from the Society is to get involved. Member’s career needs can be met by participating in Chapter activities. I urge current inactive members and new members to find a committee to join. Volunteer opportunities are never more important and necessary as now. Lastly, I plan to increase the fundraising effort this year by hosting both a Fall golf tournament and a Spring Luncheon to be able to continue the current programs and Scholarships.

If you are a Professional Engineer, or on the track to become a Professional Engineer, please consider becoming more active or joining the Society. The Greater Houston Chapter is the local chapter of TSPE. The Society’s mission is to promote the ethical, competent and licensed practice of professional engineering in order to protect the public and enhance the professional, social and economic well being of the members. The Society supports the interests of the member individual Professional Engineer member through political and legislative involvement, leadership training, professional development, and participation in programs and efforts to raise awareness of the impact of engineering upon public health and well being.

The Chapter has active committees such as the Legislative and Governmental Affairs committee which will keep members up to date on legislative issues that affect the Engineering Profession. The Professional Licensing committee tracks and provides updates to getting licensed and rule changes. The Leadership Forum along with leadership opportunities in the Chapter provides the training you need to progress in your career. Education programs provide the opportunity to “give back’ and scholarships continue to help new engineers in their educational process.

Every level of experience is welcome and needed in the Chapter. There are committees that still need volunteers. Please contact the committee chair on the Chapter website at www.tspehouston.org or me at msilver@cobfen.com. Continuing Education Units and ethics credits can be obtained by service on the board and attendance at membership meetings.

The Greater Houston Chapter of TSPE 2009-2010 fiscal year has begun on the right track with a good attendance of members at the Leadership Conference in Boerne, Texas that was held on August 14 and 15. Jim Dalton was the keynote speaker this year. He continued his leadership training by building on the leadership tools and concepts from the previous year. During last years training Mr. Dalton focused on challenging Professional Engineers to find ways to identify distinguishing differences between having an engineering degree and being a Professional Engineer. This year he pushed the discussion further and urged Professional Engineers to look out on the horizon for faint signals of what the future of Engineering will be in the next 25 years. He said to think about what issues Engineers will be facing and determine what we need to do as a group to prepare. There is an Engineering Summit planned this year to continue the discussion. I look forward to hearing the outcome and reporting back to the membership.

The Greater Houston Chapter of TSPE was presented the Region IV award for the Best Programs and Best Newsletter for the 2008-2009 fiscal year. Congratulations to all that put forth effort to make it happen.

A Legislative breakout session visually showed members how the legislative process works. Universities were used instead of political parties. You can only imagine how interesting it got. The TSPE Political Action Committee for Engineers (PACE) were able to defeat the anti-QBS legislation this last session. The PACE needs continued support to continue to fight on behalf of this issue as well as other critical issues to our profession. Any amount is accepted. Please make an investment in your future. Forms will be available at the membership meetings.

The next membership meeting will be a luncheon on September 8, 2009 at HESS where David Howell from the Texas Board of Professional Engineers (TBPE) will cover recent Rule Changes. A one hour Continuing Education Unit (CEU) in Ethics can be obtained from attended the meeting to fulfill your yearly Professional Engineering license requirement. The State Agency Banquet will be held on October 22, 2009 at the Headliner’s Club in downtown Austin.

Presidents Message - June 2009

My how the year has past quickly. Seems like yesterday most of the board and I were discussing strategies in Kerrville at the Leadership Conference. I wanted to recognize each and every Board Member, Committee Chair and Assistant Chair individually for their contributions this year. However, I would still be writing after the new officers have been installed and I would inevitably forget someone.

I want to thank all of those who helped make this year a huge success. I have never had a group of volunteers work as hard in any organization that I have been associated with. The Board, Committee Chairs and other valuable volunteers made my tenure as President an extreme pleasure. I thank each of you with the utmost sincerity.

I started the year with three goals.

1. Increase attendance at Chapter Meetings

2. Activate the Past Presidents Committee

3. Continue to grow our Educational Programs

In all, I believe as a group we were very successful at accomplishing our goals. Meeting attendance was up due to several factors including a variety of interesting speaking topics including an ethics seminar. With tremendous effort by Bill Fendley, we resurrected the Past Presidents Committee and had two very informative meetings. I hope to see all of the Past Presidents from the four chapters at the June meeting. Thanks to Liza Kirk, Amy Stonaker, Nancy Blackwell, Bert Link and numerous other volunteers. We are celebrating one of the most successful Education Programs ever. The Mathcounts team from Houston swept State and won the National Title, approximately $17,000 was awarded in scholarships and we presented numerous awards to Future Cities and Science and Engineering Fair participants. It was extremely pleasing to have over 90 in attendance at the May Education dinner.

L&GA was also very successful this year. Through the combined efforts of the TSPE Chapters throughout the state and the hard work of Gerhardt Schulle we were victorious over the Architects in our legal suit, thwarted the relentless efforts to have QBS eliminated and removed certain residential exemptions to the practice act concerning windstorm design of foundations.

As the new leadership takes over, I pledge my support to continuing the professional image of GHTSPE. Again, thanks to all. It was truly a pleasure to serve you!

TSPE Scholarship

This year the Greater Houston Chapter of TSPE received 52 scholarship applications from high school students in and around the Houston area. The scholarship review committee dedicated numerous hours to the selection of the scholarship recipients. The review committee consisted of Mr. Wayne Ahrens, P.E., Ms. Andrea Chang, P.E., Mr. Hari Vasudevan, Ms. Amy Stonaker, E.I.T., Mr. Mark Wells, P.E., Mr. Bert Link, P.E., Ms. Nancy Blackwell, P.E., Ms. Elizabeth H. Kirk, P.E., and Mr. Brian Kirk, P.E. The Greater Houston Chapter of TSPE has generously awarded scholarships to four deserving high school students.

Two students will receive a continuing 4-year scholarship in the total amount of $5,500. These students are Laura Bradt from Clear Brook High School and Lindsey Wohlfort from Memorial High School. Ms. Bradt plans to study Chemical Engineering. She is an avid runner that participates with the cross-country team and has competed in the science fair every year, even winning an award from TSPE for her engineering science fair project her freshman year. Ms. Wohlfort plans to study Biomedical Engineering. Ms. Wohlfort is a member of her school’s dance team, plays piano competitively and also competes in Math competitions.

Brynnan Webster from the Woodlands High School and Sarah Kroll from Nimitz High School have each been awarded one-time scholarships in the amount of $1000. Mr. Webster intends to pursue a degree in Chemical Engineering. He has been very involved with swimming, the Science Club, his church, and was the delegate to Boys State 2008. Ms. Kroll plans to study Mechanical Engineering. Ms. Kroll is a well-rounded and accomplished student that has been involved in competitions ranging from speech and history to fast pitch softball. She plans for a career in the field of energy with renewable resources upon graduating with a Mechanical Engineering degree.

The Greater Houston Chapter also has a scholarship program for engineering students at the University of Houston. President's Message - April 2009

It’s been a very busy past three months. E-Week was a tremendous success. I want to wish one of our members, Nancy Blackwell, good luck on chairing next years E-Week Committee. I also want to thank Rachel Ray for her hard work in representing the chapter on the E-Week Committee.

Next, thanks go out to Amy Stonaker, Liza Kirk, Nancy Blackwell, Bill Fendley and the volunteers that helped make the Houston Mathcounts Contest a success. Once again First Colony was our winner. The Houston Competition sent seven schools to Austin for the State Competition. At the State Competition, First Colony again prevailed. In addition, the Texas team going to the National Competition will be coached by Jeff Boyd of First Colony and will have two students from First Colony.

Special thanks to Bert Link for organizing judges for the Future Cities Competition and Nancy Blackwell for the Houston Science Fair. Liza Kirk has been very busy reviewing nearly 100 scholarship applications. Our newest recipients will be announced and posted on the website.

Scholarship recipients, Mathcounts winners, Future Cities winner and Science Fair honorees will be recognized at our Education Dinner May 12^th at HESS. This will be a big event so please register early.

Tom Posey has completed assembling the slate of officers for the 2009-2010 Board of Directors. The ballot will go out in the next couple of weeks. The current board will then ratify the results and announcements will be made at the May meeting.

The Past Presidents Committee took on the task of contacting those members placed on the delinquent list. Of the 150+ members on the list, 66 have been placed on the official drop list. Bill Fendley is organizing the committee to perform additional follow up to retain these members.

We have been fortunate that in the difficult economic times, we have still maintained to attract many new members. Since January, Nancy Blackwell, the Membership Chairperson, informed the Board that we have had more than 20 new members join TSPE.

On the legislative side, it appears we have been successful in tabling HB 1105 which would do away with QBS Selection. We also need to thank Commissioner Sylvia Garcia with helping the Engineers on this bill. Other current issues include proposed registration of Project Managers; Sunset Review recommendations on TxDOT, proposed legislation to allow fire truck operators to be called “Engineers” and alternative funding legislation for public construction projects. Bill Fendly and J.R. Reddish have done an excellent job communicating with Gerhardt Schulle in Austin and staying of top of these issues.

We have two more chapter meetings this fiscal year. As previously mentioned, we will have our Education Recognition Dinner on May 12^th. The final meeting will be held June 9^th. This meeting will also be a dinner in which we will recognize the Past Presidents of the Greater Houston, San Jacinto, Sam Houston and Northwest Houston Chapters. In addition, Kyle Womack, TSPE President, will install the 2009-2010 Chapter Officers.
