Reminder-TSPE Meeting Tomorrow 1/10/12

There is still time to register for tomorrow's lunch meeting, Tuesday, January 10, 2012.

TSPE’s efforts with the 82nd Legislative Session again proved to be a lot of work, and again, we had a lot of successes for PEs. While we have all been kept informed on the progress made during the session regarding issues related very closely to our profession such as preserving QBS, encroachments into our scope of practice, dam safety and the architecture/engineering scope of practice dispute, there were many other bills passed that impact our business in the construction industry.

At our January lunch meeting we are pleased to have Mr. Mitch Milby and Mr. Robert Miklos review many new bills that will impact our work in the construction industry and our business operations.Mr. Milby is an experienced trial attorney who works in the construction law field, and Mr. Miklos is a former state legislator who can provide an insider’s view of the legislative process. Please come welcome Mr. Milby and Mr. Miklos as they discuss what other matters we need to know about from the 82nd Texas Legislative Session and what we might see in the next session.

A big thank you to all the members who were able to respond with their preliminary RSVP! That allowed us to reserve Tuesday, December 13, 2011 as the date for the party. We will be celebrating the holidays at the Post Oak Grill located in the Galleria at 6:00PM.

In addition to the fabulous food, the socializing and mingling time, we will be collecting toys for the Toys for Tots program. If interested in participating, please bring a new, unwrapped, non-violent toy to the party.

The holidays are quickly approaching as we continue to plan our holiday party. Currently we are considering Tuesday, December 13 as the date of our party. We will have wonderful food available and lots of time to socialize and mingle in the beautiful Wine Room at the Post Oak Grill located in the Galleria area.

To ensure that we will have ample space available, we are asking our members to respond with a preliminarily RVSP. Reminder! the TSPE Meeting is next Tuesday, November 8, 2011!

A critical part of the Mission of TSPE is to promote the establishment and preservation of ethical conduct and practice by members of the profession. To achieve these goals, we must all stay current on the roles and responsibilities of professional engineers.

The TSPE Greater Houston Chapter is pleased to present TBPE Board Member Lamberto “Bobby” Balli, P.E., who will present a program on current rules and regulations regarding professional ethics at the November monthly luncheon. His presentation will include real life examples relating to these topics. This program will be at least one hour in length and will provide the minimum 1 PDH required per renewal period for professional license renewal relating to the area of professional ethics, roles and responsibilities of professional engineering as described in 137.17(c) of the Texas Engineering Practice Act and Rules. Please join us for an informative, interesting, and fun look at current issues related to the engineering profession.

Lamberto "Bobby" Balli, P.E.

Mr. Balli is a new member of the Texas Board of Professional Engineering joining the board in January, 2011 with a term that extends to September, 2015. A native ofSouth Texas, Bobby is an associate vice president and director of municipal services for HNTB Corporation. He is past director of public works/city engineer for the cities of McAllen, South Padre Island and Brownsville, 2011 President of the Texas Chapter of American Public Works Association - Texas Chapter and a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers. He is also a past senior advisor of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers of San Antonio, a past board member of Leadership Brownsville, Leadership McAllen and the Brownsville Boys and Girls Club, and a past board member and past disaster chair of the Rio Grande Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross. He was inducted as a Luminary Honoree by the Hispanic Engineering National Achievement Awards Conference - STEM Program. Balli received a bachelor's degree from Texas A&M University where he was a member of the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets. He resides in Houston with his wife Fernanda and two children, Jose Alberto and Mari-Fer.

This month we will be having a Joint Society Meeting with ASCE, SAME, HCEC, TPWA, TexITE, WTS, and SWE on Tuesday October 18, 2011 at Brady’s Landing. We are extremely fortunate to have these representatives available to speak to us:

Council Memebr Sullivan, Senator Whitmire and Representative Culberson will provide a panel discussion focusing on the funding and challenges that exists for Houston’s Infrastructure. A question and answer session will be part of the discussion. Be a part of this interesting and informative meeting!

Houston, like most parts of the state, is undergoing many demographic changes as more and more people choose to move to Texas to enjoy the many opportunities she has to offer. At the same time, the continued pressure of inadequate budgets and aging infrastructure prove to be a difficult balancing game in funding infrastructure. As these issues continue to evolve, the demands on the transportation system continue to mount, making it crucial that proper planning and operations be implemented to meet these ever-increasing demands. This discussion will present some of the challenges that exist and explore the opportunities available to the transportation and engineering community to help educate the public to address these challenges.

This is a great opportunity to meet with other engineering societies and enjoy an informative panel discussion on Houston’s Infrastructure. The tickets are finally here! The Annual TSPE BBQ Fundraiser will be held on Tuesday, June 14th from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at the Northeast Harris County Community Center. This is the last chance to help support the Future City, MATHCOUNTS and Scholarship programs for the 2010-2011 TSPE year. This will be a great opportunity for networking as well as meeting with the new Commissioner for Precinct 2 and the TSPE State Chapter President. There might even be an appearance by the Texas Engineer of the Year, our very own Wayne Klotz, P.E. Don't forget the proceeds from this event will continue to support the future of Engineering. If you still need continuing education credits for your license renewal, there are several events during June. Locally, there is a Leadership Forum with Ken Arnold speaking on Thursday, June 16th. The TSPE Annual Meeting will be held in Austin on June 22- 25th and provides an opportunity to receive up to 16 PDH credits. The early registration deadline for the TSPE Annual Meeting is May 27th, so don't delay. Registration for both of these events can be accessed from the Greater Houston Chapter website.

Houston we have done it again! We have produced, for a second year in a row, the Engineer of the Year. We found out late yesterday that Mr. Wayne Klotz, PE has been named as the TSPE Engineer of the Year. Wayne will be honored at the Annual meeting in June and he will be submitted to NSPE for consideration as the NSPE Engineer of the Year! Please be sure to congratulate Wayne the next time you see him.

TSPE Membership appreciation

For the past several years TSPE has experienced membership declines but there are signs the tide is turning and that soon we will start growing again. A silver lining to these tough economic times is that as an organization we have reevaluated our mission/purpose and redefined goals focused on adding membership value. At the state level TSPE’s focus has sharpened but now the challenge is for each TSPE chapter to do the same – add more value to local members. As a Greater Houston Chapter member be active and get involved.

At the recent TSPE board meeting it was agreed to implement a new membership appreciation program starting this July. A few final details are being worked but attached is a draft version that explains the program. Our goal is create top of mind awareness and thank those that are successful in recruiting new TSPE members.

TSPE is the only organization focused solely on the individual licensed professional engineer. Ours is an honorable profession and maintaining and protecting our professional engineering license is of great value. Let’s work to keep it this way.

Two students will receive a continuing 4-year scholarship in the total amount of $5,500. These students are Eric Brighton from Klein Collins High School and Ashley Gropp from Montgomery High School. Mr. Brighton plans to study Biomedical Engineering at Rice University. He competes on the cross-country team, is an Eagle Scout, member of the school Choir as well as the All State Choir. Mr. Brighton is also active in his church youth group. Ms. Gropp plans to study Civil Engineering at the University of Texas. Ms. Gropp is an avid swimmer and is a member of the National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta.

The Greater Houston Chapter also has a scholarship program for engineering students at the University of Houston. This year, students were required to write an essay on “Why Should Engineers Be Licensed”. The $1,000 scholarship is awarded to John Alred a Mechanical Engineering student at the University of Houston. Mr. Alred's essay was exceptional and is included for everyone to read.

President's Message May 2011 - Planting the Seeds of Future Growth

This year has certainly been a whirlwind of events. Over the course of the past year, the Greater Houston Chapter has had many opportunities for networking and socializing in the Engineering realm as well our local and state communities as a whole. We have had seminars that promote better communication, lessons to be learned from recent tragedies and Ethical behavior as it relates to our own lives and jobs. We have promoted the education of our community regarding local infrastructure and how Engineers are instrumental to the construction and maintenance for the betterment of all residents in the community. Our Education programs of scholarships, MATHCOUNTS, and Future City have all excelled and will contribute to the on-going support of an Engineering future. It has been my intention to help build a strong foundation and to plant seeds for future growth in our chapter through these events and seminars.

As we look to the future of TSPE at the local and state level, there will continue to be changes to improve efficiency and fiscal responsibility. For the organization to survive in our ever-changing world, we need to be flexible and contribute in any way that we are able. This organization was created with the individual Engineer in mind. We are bound to protect and promote Engineers and the future of Engineering.

The TSPE year will soon come to an end. But before it does, there are still a few items on our calendar. You recently received the voting ballot for the next year’s officers, and I do hope that you all took the opportunity to vote. There is no better way to get involved and make sure that TSPE is following the correct course of actions that are best suited to each individual member.

There are also two more events before the year is completed. This month we will have the opportunity to hear from Dr. Dale Sawyer, from the Earth Science Department at Rice University, where we can learn from one more tragedy – the recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan. We will also recognize this year’s scholarship award winners as well as those that excelled in MATHCOUNTS and Future City. Please sign up online to attend this event on Tuesday, May 10^that 6:00 pm. This meeting will be held at HESS, 5420 Westheimer.

The BBQ Fundraiser will close out the year on June 14^that 11:30 am. This event will be held at the Northeast Harris County Community Center, 10918 ½ Bentley, Houston, Texas 77093. Tickets will be $20 and can be purchased prior to the event as well as at the door. Proceeds from this event will support our Education programs – MATHCOUNTS, Future City and Scholarships.

MATHCOUNTS Shines at State

On Saturday, March 26^th, over 275 students from around the State of Texas gathered in Austin for the State MATHCOUNTS Competition. After hours of difficult testing and an extremely competitive countdown round, four students advanced to the national competition, which will be held May 5-8, in Washington, D.C. The students include Houstonians Shomik Verma from Fort Settlement Middle School in Sugar Land and Alexander Whatley from the Whatley Home School in The Woodlands, Patrick Guo from the Travis Chapter, and Niranjan Balachandar from the Preston Trails Chapter. The students will be coached by Isil Nal from the Harmony School of Excellence in Houston. You can even watch the action of the National Competition - Count Down Round on the MATHCOUNTS website www.mathcounts.orgon Friday, May 6^th at 2 pm central time. Good luck at National Mathletes!

The Greater Houston Chapter also performed very well in the team competition with five schools from the chapter finishing in the top ten teams. In fact, the top three teams at the entire competition were from the Greater Houston Chapter! The teams finished as follows; Harmony School of Excellence (1^st), Fort Settlement Middle School (2^nd), Quail Valley Middle School (3^rd), T.H. Rogers School (7^th), and St. John’s School (10^th).

Hello [firstname],

Spring is definitely springing with a bright and blooming April. As we all experience Spring Fever, whether it is a desire to frolic outside in the sun or getting our hands dirty with Spring Cleaning in our houses and yards, we are all looking for a change in our routine with ways to feel alive and full of vigor.

Dianah Dulany, the speaker for the April TSPE meeting will certainly provide a change from our normal routine with her program "How to Talk to a Real Human Being". As Engineers we often speak in our own jargon and often forget that those not directly involved in our business are not as familiar with the various acronyms and technical details. Ms. Dulany will present a fun and interactive way to connect with non-technical individuals. Please sign up on our website to attend this meeting next Tuesday, April 12th.

Also, if you were unable to attend the March meeting, you will have another chance to get your 1 hour of Ethics training to meet your continuing education requirements. Bert Link, P.E. will present another new Ethics training program titled "Henry's Daughters" on Thursday, April 14th at 5:00 pm. Registration online is also available for this this event.

I would like to remind all members that the Board meetings are open to the membership and attendance is encouraged. At the March Board meeting a new member attended and stated that he found it more interesting to see what, where and how TSPE is really active and involved. The Board had very active discussions about the current legislative session as well as the future of our organization and ways to best serve the Engineers of Texas. Please join our next meeting on Thursday, April 21st at 4:00 pm.

As you can see below, there are several job opportunities available for Engineers. If you know anyone that is looking for a job, please share the opportunities presented on the TSPE Job Board. Also, consider placing your company's request for Engineers on the TSPE Job Board. This is a free opportunity to reach the Professional Engineers in your community.

Last Friday, there was a call to TSPE members to contact your Legislators related to another anti-QBS bill that was presented on the floor Friday. Many TSPE members did make the calls and our Legislators were very appreciative to hear from everyone. There will likely be more anti-QBS bills presented and we will strive to inform everyone as quickly as possible to contact your own representatives. Jennifer McEwan is keeping close tabs on all activity specifically related to Engineers and how we do our business during this busy legislative season. If you would like to know more, please let me know.

We just finished a very busy month with P.E. Day at the Capitol and Engineers’ Week. Houston area honorees are Chad Gordon, P.E., Young Engineer of the Year and Wayne Klotz, P.E., Engineer of the Year. Congratulations to these individuals.

P.E. Day was a success with about 100 Engineers swarming through the Capitol. We were split into teams of 3-4 Engineers and were able to meet with at least one of our personal legislators as well as the staff of many others. Each team was scheduled to meet with 6 legislators. Representatives Wayne Smith, P.E. and Bill Calegari, P.E. were both there to support this event as well.

We have also wrapped up the local Education Programs for the year and our teams are now advancing to state competitions. For more details about the MATHCOUNTS program, please see the newsletter article provided by Amy Stonaker, P.E. You can still get involved as our local teams move onto the State competition, which will be held in Austin on Saturday, March 26^th. See Amy for more details.

At the Future City Competition held on Saturday, January 22^nd, two awards were given by TSPE. The “Best Engineered” Project went to the Al Hadi School with students Syed Hadi Ahmed, Ghaleb Ali Ahmed, Alizar Mehdi, and Mohammed Naqvi. TSPE awarded the “Best City Infrastructure Layout” to The Village School with students Zain Noor, Ibukunoluwa Faparusi, and Erin Dindoruk. Pictures of the winning teams are included.

Our upcoming meeting in March is “Ethicana” which will provide 1 hour of Ethics PDH credit. This is a great opportunity to see a newly released program while gaining your required hours. Don’t forget to sign up online.

Elections for our new officers will soon be upon us. If you have an interest in participating, please let one of the current officers know. Edwin Friedrichs, P.E. will be the next Greater Houston Chapter President. Getting involved at the local level is a great opportunity to earn up to 5 hours of continuing education credits for each year of involvement.
