Greater Houston Chapter Page 2 of 4 About Our Programs TSPE believes that interest in engineering begins at a young age. Our desire is to nurture this interest at the middle school level through MATHCOUNTS and Future City Competitions. The Chapter's support of education continues into high school and college by providing scholarship and outreach programs for local students. MATHCOUNTS: For the past 29 years, this nationwide program has encouraged interest and proficiency in mathematics among intermediate school students. Recent teams from Texas have been a force to be reckoned with at the state and national levels. In the past 7 years, Houston area competitors have won 7 state team titles, 4 national team titles and 2 national individual titles. The Texas Society of Professional Engineers (TSPE) is a major group within the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) and has a membership of some 6,000 at this time. The local Greater Houston Chapter has around 800 members in multiple disciplines including civil, chemical, mechanical, and electrical. The only requirement for membership is the person must either be a Licensed Engineer or be in the process of becoming licensed.

The Greater Houston Chapter was formed when three separate local chapters (the Northwest Chapter, San Jacinto Chapter, and Sam Houston Chapter) decided to pool their membership in order to provide a better service to their members by having larger attendance at meetings which in turn provided more prominent speakers for the events. Past speakers have included Mayors, County Judges, Engineering Deans, Experts in the Field, and Presidents at the State and National Levels of our organization.

Some programs that the Greater Houston Chapter continues to be involved in are continuing education, scholarship fundraising, Engineer's Week Committee, MathCounts, Houston Science Fair, public awareness, and Engineering Council of Houston.

The Greater Houston Chapter is also active in mentoring with students and companies in order to provide insight and support to young and future Engineers.

Legislative Interim - 2009-2010

The interim is an important time for legislative and governmental affairs issues. It is a time to slow down and discuss important issues with each other. It is a time to get to know your legislator. It is a time to educate our officials on what is important to us so they can represent our issues when called upon.

At the state level, we are monitoring interim legislative and state agency hearings and reporting back to you. TxDOT and TDI will have Sunset hearings in addition to their regular hearing schedule, and we will have the opportunity to weigh in on how these agencies are reformed. The House and Senate Transportation committees will both be looking at critical transportation finance issues as our state struggles with the question of how to adequately fund our infrastructure needs.

Political Action Committee for Engineers

The Political Action Committee for Engineers (PACE) distributes funds collected from members of the Texas Society of Professional Engineers. These funds are contributed to candidates for legislative and statewide offices whose ideology and/or voting records are consistent with the goals and objectives of engineers. While the amount contributed may be modest in comparison to a number of other political action committees, this along with other Texas Society of Professional Engineers' involvement will allow us to continue to be a leading voice for Texas engineers. The PACE Board of Trustees meets several times a year to monitor political developments, formulate endorsements and recommend contributions to various candidates. Endorsed candidates do not necessarily receive PACE contributions, as some may be unopposed or simply not fully supportive of TSPE's legislative agenda.

In addition, PACE co-sponsors, along with the Legislative & Governmental Affairs Committee, a legislative reception early each regular legislative session. Finally, PACE and TSPE work together with other business and professional groups (such as the Texas Civil Justice League and Texans for Lawsuit Reform) in order to have an effective impact upon the election process, thus electing candidates to political offices who will help make a healthier economic environment for all Texans.

If issues such as protecting the integrity of your engineering registration, liability reform, taxation, competitive bidding, etc., are to be influenced by engineers, we must continue to increase our level of commitment so that our impact with elected officials will become more significant.

Engineering is an honored profession. Many studies have indicated that the general public has great respect for the engineering profession and the ethics that engineers exhibit. We must ensure that our profession remains in high esteem and make certain that those who aspire to reduce our position in society are not successful. We must make sure that we have a healthier business climate in Texas if we are going to have a higher standard of living for ourselves and future generations.

Annual State Meeting

The TSPE Conference & 75th Annual Meeting The TSPE Conference & 75th Annual Meeting will be hosted June 22-25, 2011 by the Austin Chapter. The conference is a prime opportunity to network with other professional engineers in all disciplines from across the state of Texas. It also is a convenient way to earn the Professional Development Hours (PDHs) required to renew your P.E. license in Texas. Over the course of three days, you can satisfy all your PDH requirements (including the mandatory ethics requirement), as well as earn credits and learn valuable information on everything from risk management and public outreach to technical presentation skills and behavioral coaching. The meeting typically has additional activities such as a golf tournament, social outting and spouse/guest activities during the day.
